“chicken tendies” now available! how do you feel?
alright, the response has been crazy. it’s rare to see a song called “chicken tendies” on the billboard. It’s very strange, very funny. I made up that name. I don’t think tendies is even a word if we’re being honest. but i feel really good about it. that song is much more hopeful, much more love and sad love. very excited, everyone seems to love it, so I’m very excited.

why did you name it “chicken tendies”?
everyone thinks it has a deeper meaning. there’s a line in the second verse that says “i think we saw you and me in our kitchen where i cooked your favorite food”. the song is about my mom, everyone thinks it’s her favorite food. seriously i called it chicken tendies because i made a video that first blew up on tiktok where i react to the song. at the time, i really wanted chicken tendies, so i yelled it out of the blue. it became fashionable and everyone said “if you don’t name the song ‘chicken tendies,’ we’re not going to hear it.” so I said “fuck it, let’s do it”.
I saw you post that you lost someone and the comments on the song helped me. How is your mental state?
It has been better. I’m dealing with it behind closed doors and everything. he had to tell everyone something so it didn’t look like he just disappeared. “chicken tendies” was one of the best weeks of my life, but somehow I just walked away. I had to feel it a bit and cry in my room for countless nights. so cool, so lovely. however, it helped my skin, now I have better skin. I’m pretty sure it helps.
what was it like filming the music video? I saw you driving with the top down, living your best life.

that was great. however, I got incredibly sunburned because the top was down and it was so sunny. My face hurt a little, but it was a lot of fun. very funny to hear “chicken tendies” a thousand times in the same car, going around the same block. however, it was very good, it was a fun time. I had my colleagues there, everything was great.
Anything you want the fans to get from this album?
first of all, the key to success is to name your song with a really strange name. that’s one. for all singer-songwriters, all they have to do is name some word that doesn’t really exist. the main thing is that relationships with people, important people, family, at the end of the day we are all human. you can’t judge or tell anyone how to deal with things or tell them how to deal with life. everyone goes through their own things and has their own way of dealing with it. you have to understand that no one really wants to hurt anyone when they leave or do something wrong. it is much built from the past, this and that. is to understand and love them anyway.
what were you going through recording “remember the mornings (memories of her)”?
I hate the girl I wrote that about. [laughs] I hate the song, we don’t care about it. but the song is good, i got a good song out of it. when I released the song, it was great. then I’m like “wow, I don’t like it and it ruins the song for me because it’s about her”. I’ve played that song if we’re being honest, but it’s not that bad, not that bad.
talk about going from being homeless to now signing with columbia.
gosh, that was crazy. I didn’t know what I was doing with my life back then, I had just dropped out of pre-med. I was trying soul searching. I didn’t go to Greece to make music or have something in mind, I was searching for my soul. the funniest part is when i left greece and came back to australia i still hadn’t found anything. I still didn’t know what I was going to do with my life and I thought “well damn, that was useless. a waste of money, a waste of being homeless for 2 weeks. what did I do? I came back and everything happened. everything started working for some reason.
I don’t think that happens a lot, so I’m very blessed and very lucky that everything is turning out the way it is. I have an amazing team behind me. I don’t think I’ll get rid of my past for nothing because it taught me a lot. It taught me to be grounded, it taught me to appreciate the little things, it taught me a lot of life lessons that I would never have if I had signed right away without experiencing all of that.
How did you find your way to Colombia?
that happened with the anxiety song. I wrote that down and said “oh my god, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.” I posted it, then wrote another song the next day, “This is what a toxic relationship feels like.” I woke up, the song exploded a little. 800k views when I woke up, then everything started spinning in a really good way. i signed with columbia because they are basically the best. Now we are here.
3 things you need in the studio?
I need a lot of water. I drink about 10 liters a day, I need about 2.5 jugs. I need sprite, that’s good. I need coffee. all drinks, that’s all I have.
How did you move around the world and now reside in Las Vegas?
It was really scary at first. for most people, they are afraid to go out and explore. being in consecutive places at once and not having a place to come home to. for me, it was the opposite. I was afraid to find a place for a long time. I’m not used to this. every time I settle down somewhere, in a couple of months I’m like: “I want to get out and go!” that’s what I got used to. as soon as my lease is up move from las vegas to who knows where. I’ll move right next to you. We’ll be roommates.
It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen. I was in Los Angeles, they kicked me out. amsterdam, turkey, i don’t even know how many countries i’ve been to in the last 4 years, but it’s been a lot. Now I’m in Vegas, it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. if you were to ask me what is the best thing that has happened to me in 2020: I “drowned” with martin garrix, etc. no, it’s my lease. this apartment is the best there is and that is what it is. nothing more. it helped a lot, being stable and secure. it feels good to go somewhere and say “I want to go home now”. I never got to say that, so I feel great. I am very excited about this place, even though it is a disaster. is a new change.
